Individual medal-haul gives Uganda desired joy

Uganda fell narrowly short at the 17th Brookside East Africa Secondary School games accumulating 25 medals to Kenya’s 28 as the games climaxed in Musanze, Rwanda over the weekend.

Nevertheless, there were a number of outstanding individual performances for team Uganda.
Uganda underlined their dominance in netball with as St. Noah Girls school edged St. Mary’s Kitende 36-34 to keep up with the country’s tradition of winning all seventeen editions in the discipline.

The country has also been dominant in football with Buddo SS ensuring the title returned to Uganda after edging Lycée de Kigali (Rwanda) 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular time.

“I have already built a side that will be able to compete in the next editions,” boasted the now sought after Buddo SS coach Simon Mugerwa.

This time he relied on the experience of former Express goalkeeper Tony Kyamera and Kato Samuel to add to the national schools title they won earlier this year.

“We have been together for long up to 60% have been together for three years.
“We also had determination to try and win two major titles in one season,” Mugewrwa said on return.
Kibuli SS may meanwhile have faded as a sports powerhouse but still had Fadhila Shamika win the badminton MVP award after bagging a silver in girls. Badminton.

It was a similar case in girls football as Mariam Nakabugo won the MVP accolade despite her Kawempe Muslim side going down 1-0 to Kenya’s Kwale in the girls’ football competition.

Uganda, who were a major threat to Kenya’s hopes of retaining the title were once again forced to play second fiddle after grabbing a total 25 medals.
They had nine gold, 10 silver and six bronze.
