KAMPALA. The five-month Singleton Match-play Challenge is a competition that raised the bar for Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) early this year.
Thereafter, there has been little pomp for the club members. However, there is something to look forward at the par-71 lakeside course - the annual Chairman’s Cup - on Saturday.
The showpiece, set to be played in stableford format, is bankrolled by Afrisafe Risk Consultants who unveiled a Shs80m sponsorship for this year’s ninth edition.
“We are a new brand and as a way to launch, we have decided to give back by sponsoring this event,” said Afrisafe Chairman Kwame Ejalu said at a press conference held at their premises Redstone House yesterday.
About 240 golfers will take part in the event will be held to commemorate Dr. Tumubweine Twinemanzi’s second year in office as EGC chairman.
“We have had very promising partnerships at the club and we want this one to go far,” Twinemanzi said of the sponsorship.
“We are hoping that as a club, we can have long-term partnership like we have with Nile Breweries, JBG and an eight-year relationship with Alexander Forbes and Marsh.”
The one-day event also sees Afrisafe also offer a Jeep Grand Cheroke car worth $88,000 (Shs316m) for whoever strikes a hole-in-one on any of the five par-3 Holes No. 2, 6, 8, 12 and 16.
“We kept it as a secret so as to keep the members guessing,” EGC committee member Marvin Kagoro noted.
Part of the sponsorship sees a Shs10m kitty for the professionals. Also, the guests will feature in a raffle draw where they stand to win a one-year offer of personal accident insurance policy worth Shs500m or house insurance for the value of the winner’s residence from Afrisafe.
