KAVC, Sport-S set to throw last dice in NSSF League men’s final series

Sport-S’ Dickens Otim (7) and Allan Tumukunde (14) try to block Nemostars’ Christopher Ajena during the National Club Championship. Sport-S eliminated league champions Nemostars at the semifinal stage. Today, Nemostars have a chance of sealing the league title but they must take care of KAVC.

Sport-S have won three titles (Makerere, Ndejje and Nkumba Open tournaments) already but the league crown is by far the most prestigious

Game Five of the NSSF National Volleyball League men’s final at Lugogo Indoor Stadium tonight is without a doubt the biggest game for KAVC and Sport-S this year.

For KAVC, the fixture carries even more significance as it could be their only chance to win any kind of silverware this season.

Sport-S have won three titles (Makerere, Ndejje and Nkumba Open tournaments) already but the league crown is by far the most prestigious.

But both sides have won the league four times in their history and whoever triumphs today will have captured a record fifth title.

KAVC lost last year’s series 3-0 to Nemostars and last tasted league glory in 2010.

Sport-S lost to Nkumba Navy in the 2011 finals while 2009 was the last time they celebrated league glory. “Four years without winning the league is a long time for a team like Sport-S,” said Sport-S skipper Andrew Wandera. “We should have sealed the title in game four but a lot didn’t go our way. But we have worked on all our mistakes and we will approach the game like a totally different side,” he added.

Wandera, setter Warren Muhangi and Patrick Musoke plus coach Benon Mugisha are the only surviving members of Sport-S’ 2010 title-winning side.

For KAVC, Alex Nduhukire, Eric Ogwanga, Amon Ainebyona, Richard Tamale and Matthew Mwenyi were present when they defeated Nkumba 2-1 in the best-of-three final series five years ago. With such experience in their ranks, both sides should put up a thrilling show to crown the season.
