The side have won two tournaments as they build up for the Confederation of Africa Volleyball Women’s Club Championship due in a fortnight in Madagascar.
Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) coach Hannington Nsubuga is increasingly gaining confidence his side will put up an impressive show at the Confederation of Africa Volleyball Women’s Club Championship in Madagascar.
KAVC won the Jinja Open at the weekend, their second victory in three tournaments. They came top in the Joan Cox Memorial Open last month following an average display in the Makerere Open.
In all the three outings, coach Nsubuga has juggled his side in an attempt to get the best formation for the continental showpiece.
At the start of the year, Nsubuga pulled off a masterstroke by moving Eunice Nuwabigaba from attack to setting. Interestingly, Nuwabigaba has excelled in her new role and was voted the tournament’s best setter on Sunday. “She (Nuwabigaba) has it all - the height, good serve and block,” Nsubuga said of the player. “Just give her time.”
Besides Nuwabigaba, Nsubuga was impressed by his entire team’s overall performance in Jinja after they won all their games and dropped only one set - against KAVC Veterans. “We are improving in our net defence, which was key in this tournament. We are still polishing our back court defense and attack,” Nsubuga said after the Sunday victory.
“I have the challenge of preparing my players psychologically,” he added. “Within the next two weeks we will be set for the Africa championship.” This weekend’s Ndejje Open offers Nsubuga another opportunity to sharpen his guns.
They will then head for the KIU Open during the Easter weekend before the Africa tourney starts on April 5.
