When he came second to home boy Nelson Simwa, Willy Deus Kitata was left reeling after falling short of the top prize at Kenya’s Amateur Strokeplay Open Championship last year.
But Kitata is eager to make amends when this year’s edition tees off at the lavish Muthaiga Golf Club course in Nairobi this morning.

“Stage fright cost me a bit then,” said Kitata on arrival in Nairobi on Monday. “I was a bit scared. But now I am a big boy in East Africa and I have been playing some good golf for the national team. I also just won the Burundi Open recently.”

And as he seeks to join the professional ranks next year, Kitata wants to bow out on a high. “This could be my last year as an amateur, I am hungry for many titles. My short game has improved and Muthiaga suits my style,” the 2013 Uspa Male Golfer of the Year added.
