Kitende hungry for more East Africa success despite latest triumphs

KAMPALA. With titles in netball and boys’ football categories, St. Mary’s Kitende were one of the country’s better performers as the 16th Brookside East Africa Secondary School games climaxed on Saturday.
The triumphs, that also included a second place finish in girls’ basketball, saw participants welcomed by a sumptuous dinner following a procession led by several boda boda cyclists that brought traffic in Kajjansi to a standstill on Sunday afternoon.

But as the celebrations subsided, the unifying message from the coaches of the various disciplines was that of a school still craving for even more success.
“The gap among schools has decreased so it was a lot to tougher to win. We need more time to prepare teams like was the case when there was an S1 and S2 tournament so that players get used to these high profile tournaments earlier,” football coach Edward Golola stated.

Victory over Jinja SS was the 12th time Kitende claimed the football title in 16 years but first since 2014.
Netball coach Fred Mugerwa is also keen to build another team after losing several starters.
“We had five players who are completing high school this year so we want to prepare another team of the Sandra Nambirige Margaret Bagala Akello Penelope Amiya group to also be in position to retain the title,” Mugerwa explained. Under his tutelage, the school has only missed out on the schools regional title.

Women basketball team coach Boniface Okello also reckons his team will be in contention next year after losing 66-55 to Buddo SS.
“I used a very young team particularly my front court players who can only get better next year,” he explained.
