Hosts Uganda are putting up a formidable fight in boys’ football, basketball boys and girls, badminton and table tennis among others.
Kololo SS want to bring home Uganda’s first rugby 7s crown. “I think we can win. You see the confidence is there within us,” Kololo SS’ Haruna Muhammed said.
Rugby 7s was introduced to the annual games’ menu at the 14th edition in Huye, Rwanda two years ago. Et Ste Trinite, the hosts, won the inaugural edition.
Last year, St Peter’s Mumias beat Ugandan champions Kololo SS in the final to keep the title in Eldoret.
With the famed Kakamega School which many Ugandans can relate to in terms of rugby tradition not playing in the 7s tournament, the inaugural winners and Kololo SS are the teams to watch. Of the four Ugandan sides in the eight-team event, Kololo SS have posted the most impressive results, beating Trinite (17-7) and Kenya’s Muhuri Muchuri (21-7). However, they lost to Trinite 12-7 in preliminaries. “There has been one bad result and we know how and why we lost. We can rectify that,” Muhammed, who also plays for Buzz Pirates in the league, explained.
“Now that the knockout stage is here, all you have to do is execute once the ball comes to you,” he added. With the 15s and 7s being played concurrently, some teams are having to switch players from one code to the other.
Kololo SS only entered a 7s team and their players are getting the desire breathers to stay competitive.
