KAMPALA. Only 16 players out of the summoned 28 turned up for the She Cranes training on Monday. The training is aimed at preparing for the Commonwealth Games due April in Gold Coast, Australia.

The She Cranes qualified for the Games after lifting the Africa Netball Championships. The team was drawn in Group B alongside netball heavyweights New Zealand, England, Malawi, Wales, Scotland.

According to Stella Kwebiha, the acting team manager, on Monday players were taught the dos and don’ts on and off pitch that included time consciousness and ‘regular attendance’ of team engagements.

These seem to have fallen on deaf ears as turn up was still low on Tuesday.
Kwebiha said most of the players forwarded apologies backing their absence.

“You know most of our players are single parents, so there is no way you can fail to listen to their issues especially those concerning parenthood,” she said.

However, coaches Imelda Nyongesa and Rashid Mubiru - who have not yet been approved by the netball federation - seemed unbothered with the low turn up.

“The turn up is okay, we didn’t expect all of them to report at once,” he said.
Kwebiha stated, “We cannot call them coaches as of now as they still await confirmation from the board members,” adding that a board meeting is soon sitting to decide who’s who during preparation for Commonwealth Games.
