In Summary
At last year’s championship held in Mozambique, Lunkuse was best swimmer in the breaststroke with 1 gold (100m), silver (200m) and bronze (50m)
Olympian Jamila Lunkuse was yesterday unanimously crowned the Rwenzori-Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) sports personality of the month of April by journalists.
UK-based Lunkuse won six gold medals and silver at the Confederation of Africa Swimming Championship (CANA) Zone 3 and 4 championships held in Lusaka, Zambia last month.
She clocked 2:53.10 to beat South Africa’s Koen Mieke (2:58.73) and Zambia’s Paljk Tilka (2:58.79) to the gold.
In the 100m breaststroke, she won another gold medal clocking 1:17.29. Her record championship time is 1:17.03. Lunkuse, who is on a sports scholarship at UK’s Plymouth College, settled for silver in the 50m freestyle (28.09) after being beaten to gold by Botswana’s Naomi Ruele.
“We are awarding her under the Rwenzori brand because she is a minor,” Uspa President Mark Namanya said yesterday.
“Nile Breweries, our sponsors, do not want their flagship brand Nile Special to endorse minors.”
Uspa commended woodballer Lillian Zawedde for winning a bronze medal at the 6th Hong Kong International Open Woodball championship in Wu Kai Sha Village Ma on Shan.
