BOMBO- For the bigger part of the crowd at the 17th edition of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games in Ndejje, beach handball has been one of the most exciting sports.
The sport is a new introduction to the Games and has attracted only three universities but that has not the dampened the feel good factor about it.
An artificial beach court, filled with sand, was set up at the extreme end of the sports complex and the hosts Ndejje’s female team where the first to taste victory on it as they beat Kampala University 2-0.
Makerere’s men led by captain Ivan Odur, also managed to dismiss Nkumba in straight sets in what was the first time for the both sides to play the game.
“It is an exciting game because of the sets. The usual handball is just about goals but here, you either win in two straight sets or go for a decider,” Odur said.
“It is also fun to play in the sand but most importantly we are all just learning a new code of the game,” Odur added.
Earlier in the usual handball, hosts Ndejje built on Day One’s 25-15 win over Kyambogo as they obliterated Kampala International University (KIU) 31-11 in the ladies’ Pool B.
“The wins are important for our aspirations and for lifting the morale in the team,” said captain Harriet Nansubuga, who expects the toughest competition as they chase gold to come from Nkumba.
Nkumba are only participating in ball games.
