Aside from the persistent cold, Badiru Ssembatya braved a rowdy group of fans to earn his maiden ticket to the Nile Special National Pool Open finals after winning the Mbale Qualifier on Friday night.
When the fans interrupted sessions, queried umpire Godfrey Muluya’s decisions and celebrated shots in an uncontrollable manner, Ssembatya held his nerve to comfortably defeat Eddy Modi 4-0 in the best-of-seven final at Mbale Sports Club in the early hours of Saturday.
“It was a fair contest for me,” a calm Ssembatya told Daily Monitor.
Whereas digital technician Modi will make his second appearance at the finals after 2012’s, Ssembatya, a mobile phone accessory dealer in Mbale, will trek to Kampala aiming to leave a mark at the Lugogo Arena on September 6.
Ssembatya had defeated Micheal Maaloni 3-2 in the semifinal while Modi beat 47-year-old Sulaiman Wadola 3-1.
