Uganda’s flag bearer at the 2012 Olympics, Ganzi Mugula, has resumed training in Kiwatule ahead of next year’s Fina World Masters Championships.

Mugula, 33, hopes to swim at the 15th edition of the biennial event that attracts swimmers aged above 25. The championship will be held in Montreal, Canada from July 24 – August 10. “I have moved into training ahead of schedule enough I want to compete and win medals at the Fina World Masters’ Championships,” Mugula said.

“I am starting off in the gym because I want to condition my body. I will start training in the pool later this month but I am also doing some roadwork to increase my fitness,” he said. Mugula has represented Uganda in various international events including the Olympics, World Championships (2003 and 2009) and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.

Like most Ugandan swimmers, Mugula’s international medal cabinet is everything but impressive. He, however, feels next year could be the right time for him to harvest something on the international scene.
“Everyone goes into these competitions to win and I am not any different. But to do that I will have to improve in many aspects including my personal best timings,” he said.

The Fina World Masters Championships was first held in Tokyo, Japan in 1986 and the last edition was held in Riccione, Italy in June 2012.
