Muwonge seeking re-election

In Summary

Cycling. Aside the president’s job, there are four other roles that are to be contested for including the publicity secretary and second vice president’s positions.

The Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) holds its general assembly at the National Council of Sports (NCS) headquarters, Lugogo today with the incumbent president Sam Muwonge seeking re-election.

The elective general assembly is held after every four years with the last one having been held in 2009. According to Muwonge, the association has got no term limits and it is for this reason that he has decided to stand for a second term as he feels there is still a lot of unfinished business.

Muwonge is only aware of one opponent in James Mugisha.

“Initially there were two people vying for this post but then the other candidate Yusuf Mbaziira pulled out and opted to stand for the general secretary’s role,” explained Muwonge.

Allegations
He is however standing amidst allegations that he has turned cycling into a family affair. Muwonge dismissed this accusation.

“Most of the good riders are from the Ngabi clan which I am affiliated to. Their names make people think they are part of my family,” he clarified.

During his term in office, Muwonge is credited for having paid the international affiliation fees of 3,000 Swiss Franc (an estimated Shs5m). The UCA was initiated in 1967 but it is still struggling to find its feet as one of the vibrant sports in Uganda. Muwonge says he will introduce junior championships in schools in order to tap talent.
