NSSF increase KAVC event sponsorship to Shs130m

What you need to know:
- Volleyball. The tournament will also include a primary school championship where the top two finalists in the U12 and U14 (girls and boys) pre- qualifying games held on July 22 will play their final on August 5. Four sitting volleyball teams are also expected to compete on August 4 and 5.
Kampala. The annual NSSF-KAVC International retains its goal of giving local volleyball players the exposure and experience they need.
The 22nd edition due August 3-5 will attract over 15 local and 10 foreign teams – six men and four women including respective champions APR and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) and also marks 10 years since NSSF entered into a partnership with hosts Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC).
For a memorable anniversary, NSSF have increased the sponsorship this year from Shs80m to Shs130m.
Good corporate citizen
“Our sponsorship is premised on the view that although we are primarily a social security fund, we recognise that we must be a “Good Corporate Citizen”, playing a role in the sustainable development and well-being of the community in which we do business,” NSSF acting managing director Patrick Ayota, said of the 38.5 per cent increase.
“I would also like to challenge the Ugandan teams; we need the trophies to stay home this year,” Ayota, who commended the increased awareness on social security among sports fans as they have reached over 10,000 people since 2014 through their customer service tent at the tournament, added.
It is easy to see why Ayota is daring local teams to improve.
Over 10 per cent of the support will go to prize money as both male and female winners will walk away with $1,000 (Shs3.5m), runners-up $500 (Shs1.75m) and second runners-up $300 (Shs1m) in addition to trophies. KAVC men and women have won this trophy six and eight times respectively but territory has since shifted to Rwanda as a Ugandan club last won this annual event in 2014 when Sky beat Rwanda’s Inatek. KAVC last won in 2011 beating fellow Ugandan side Sport S 3-0.
Technical equipment
The rest of the funds will go towards purchase of technical equipment and related accessories, tournament referees, trophies, cash rewards for outstanding players, publicity, security, as well overall organization of the tournament.
“We are proud to be a premier club in this country and we do not take this partnership with NSSF for granted.
“It has enabled us spot more talent and some players that have joined professional ranks have been highlighted,” KAVC technical director Shilla Omuriwe Buyungo, said speaking about Cuthbert Malinga in Bulgaria, Daudi Okello in Turkey, Saviour Atama and Ivan Ongom in Rwanda. The primary schools played over the weekend.
