What you need to know:

The Ugandan university has now won the regional overall gong two straight editions having claimed their first in Dar es Salaam two years ago. KIU came second, with hosts UCU finishing third.

Mukono- Ndejje remained unplayable in the region after resoundingly retaining the Eastern Africa University Games (EAUG) overall title as the championships ended at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono yesterday. Having won the 2012 edition in Dar es Salaam, the Luwero-based institution amassed 98 medals from all disciplines including 34 gold, 28 silver and 36 bronze.

They won in athletics, badminton, woodball and table tennis en route to the feat.

Kampala International University (KIU) finished second with a distant 58 medals that included 32 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze.
UCU, who became the first private institution to host these games, garnered 42 medals to finish third.

They picked 13 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze to indicate a shift in sporting power from public universities to private institutions, a factor that could be attributed to increased study scholarships offered by non-government institutions to talented students.

“The trick to winning it back-to-back is in long term planning,” Ndejje Sports tutor Paul Kayongo told Daily Monitor, “We started slowly and the fruits are showing,” he added.

“The other thing is that we try to field athletes in as many fields as possible, plus get coaches for all disciplines. But most of it has been made possible by the university administration which gives us a sizeable budget.”
Kenyatta University and Makerere in fourth and seventh positions respectively were the highest ranked public institutions as curtains fell.
