Kampala- Nemostars are favourites to win the National Volleyball League men’s title after defeating KAVC 3-1 in Game One of the final play-off series on Saturday.
Both teams showed enviable passion in the Lugogo encounter, celebrating every point like it was a match winner. Either side also contested every questionable refereeing call as the thrilling action kept fans on the edges of their seats.
But Nemostars needed one hour and 47 minutes to come out on top, moving closer to their second straight league title.
“Our target was to win the first game and take the pressure off our shoulders,” Nemostars captain George Aporu said. “We are glad everything is now working according to plan.”
Nemostars produced some resilient net defence to take the first set 26-24. But KAVC forced Nemostars into endless errors on reception and defense in the second set to win it 25-23. KAVC’s nspirational diagonal attacker Pierre Kamugashsa lost his earlier rhythm and struggled mid-way the third set. He laboured to play the ball over and when he did he was either blocked or played it out.
That worked into Nemostars’ advantage as setter Smith Okumu set up inviting balls for Aporu to rip apart KAVC’s defence.
“He (Aporu) is the fittest player on the team,” Okumu revealed after the game. “He always teases opponents when he goes up, but it was made easy after the rest of the guys improved their reception,” Okumu added. Nemostars sealed that set 25-21 and eased through the fourth 25-16.
“Our game plan was disorganized,” KAVC coach Alex Nduhukire said. “We are going to revise all that and will be a better side in Game Two,” he added. The two side lock horns this Wednesday in Game Two at Lugogo.
Meanwhile, in the women’s semifinal series, Ndejje beat KCCA 3-1 on Saturday. The victory gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead in the series.
In the other pairing, KAVC edged Nkumba 3-2 to level the series at one game apiece.
