Nkumba hope to maintain form until playoffs

In Summary

Nkumba sit atop the 10-team log with nine points from three outings

Despite being early days in the season, 2011 National Volleyball League men’s champions Nkumba believe they can capitalise on their current form to steal away from the chasing pack.

Nkumba, KAVC and champions Nemostars are the only teams in the men’s Serie A with a 100 percent record.

Nkumba sit atop the 10-team log with nine points from three outings.

“It’s still a long way to go but we are on track with our target,” said Albert Gayi, Nkumba’s coach player. “We want to keep up there until the playoffs.” On Saturday, Nkumba defeated Mulago 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20) before seeing off Old Kampala in similar fashion (3-1) with the scores reading 25-19, 18- 25, 25-20 and 25-18.

Weak areas
Against Mulago and Old Kampala, Nkumba’s concentration and reception were questioned as they lost their second sets after strolling to easy wins in the first. They also dropped one against Sport-S in their league opener.

“We know that the three sets we have lost so far might cost us in the future,” acknowledged Gayi, who is the side’s main setter. “But it is early days in the league and all we have to do is see how the season progresses.”

Ndejje and KAVC, who lie second and third respectively have played a game less and are on five points. Champions Nemostars, fresh from Libya, got off to a flier with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) demolition of UCU Mukono in their opener.
