Simba hold Weatherhead in MPL National Hockey League

Peter Elolu enjoyed an exceptional first half for Weatherhead in the Monitor Publications Limited (MPL) National Hockey League. But Simba bounced back with goals from Jerome Owor and Wycliffe Bulwanyi on Sunday.

KAMPALA.

Peter Elolu’s exceptional first half performance wasn’t enough to earn Weatherhead a win in their first MPL National Hockey League encounter against Simba on Sunday at Lugogo.

The central attacker scored a brace inside the first 18 minutes but Simba managed to get back into the game, with goals from Jerome Owor and Elolu’s former KHC (Kampala Hockey Club) teammate and fullback Wycliffe Bulwanyi, each time he posed questions. KHC could do with both players on current form.

Form and confidence
“Lots of things we put into training are coming out in matches, maybe that explains the form and confidence,” Elolu, who wowed fans with mazy dribbles and his creative instinct, said. “We could have done better, but we spent most of the second half protecting the lead rather than going forward and Simba found a way,” he added.

Simba could have won, but captain Muhammad Ali fluffed a flick before Bulwanyi, ran from deep to exchange passes with the industrious Dennis Okende and tap home from close range with 15 minutes to play.

Earlier on, Weatherhead’s senior ladies’ side Gazelles had labored to a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Joan Andika and Siddy Alum, over the dilapidated KHC Swans that had to make do with winger Judith Mirembe in goal.

Swans were more dominant in the second half but the decision to leave some players out of the squad, as a plan to give young talent playing time, was counter-productive.
