KAMPALA. Prior to the start of a season expected to be more competitive than ever, Skin Samona is taking the threat of Atagenda and Ronz seriously.
Skin Samona may have won the pool league title seven times, more than any other team, but with more teams expected to join the fight at the front, the Wakaliga side is aware that fending off growing competition may not be easy. “All top players are in the senior league; you need to respect every team,” veteran player Asuman Bukenya told Daily Monitor.
“We are taking the new boys like Atagenda and Ronz seriously. These guys have shown that they can fight for the title and some others may surprise us,” he added. Samona has finished in fourth place for the last two seasons.
Samona have re-signed Dan Mubiru from Ronz where he won the title last year. He will link up with a galaxy of stars that includes top seed Fahad Ssewankambo, Geoffrey Ssetumba, Bukenya, seed nine Joseph Kasozi and Amos Ndyagumanawe as they strive to get back to winning ways.
But their competitors are also armed to the teeth with personnel and stashes of cash.
Atagenda, who were formed last year and won League One on the first time of asking have sealed three major signings including last season’s most disciplined player Ganny Abdul from Anchors, who is seeded 22. They also have acquired William Mirembe from CKI. He spent most of the time last season on loan at Scrap Buyers. The other addition is Ibra Sewali from Sinkers, who could beef up the substitute’s bench.
Sporting director Wasswa Kayiiya, who surprisingly plays for Scrap Buyers, said that their squad lacked firepower and needed to beef up for a tougher mission in the top flight.
Last year’s champions, Ronz, hired Tony Kasozi to fill the gap left by Mubiru. They are still a formidable force with last season’s MVP Eric Mugabo and seed eight Allan Nsubuga.
CKI, who lost the title by one point are reluctant to spend but have Abdul Ssekitto returning from studies and boast of four top seeds; Sula Matovu (3), Joram Nabaasa( 7), Musa Sekiriba (14) and Mansoor Bwanika (16).
Masaka’s Elite Klein has sensational Glorious Ssenyonjo and seed two Alfred Gumikiriza who could make Nyendo a hard place to visit.
