KAMPALA- Uganda Christian University (UCU)’s volleyball sides are eager to make a mark at their own UCU Open tournament that starts tomorrow in Mukono.
The men’s side UCU Doves have never won the tournament which might make their mission look impossible. But their captain Innocent Asizu is hopeful the fortunes can be changed.
“We have been poor at most outings,” said the setter. “But we have prepared well and are really focused on winning our own tournament.”
The Lady Doves, however, have reason to fancy their chances since they notched top honours in 2010.
“We have shown lot of improvement in different departments,” captain Jackie Nangobi said.
“Our net defence has been a problem but if you look at our last league performance you will agree that our defence and court cover are some of the areas where we have improved. Nangobi and company have surely put up some good displays in the women’s league like stretching playoff candidates Ndejje Elites and KAVC.
They lost to the latter in a decisive set and won the game against KAVC in the decisive set.
The Mukono sides will have to contend with defending champions Nkumba Navy for the men and KCCA for the ladies titles respectively.
