UCU to wrestle netball title from Nkumba’s grasp

Atwegyeise is confident UCU will stifle champions Nkumba on home court

Mukono.
One of the most intriguing battles at the Eastern Africa University Games starting today at UCU Mukono will be on the netball court.

While majority of the 53 participating universities are expected to field teams, the general consensus is that Nkumba and UCU are front runners for the netball crown.

“We know that Nkumba are our biggest threat,” Marion Atwegyeise, the UCU netball vice-captain, said on Monday. “They beat us in the final two years ago but we are now a better team. We have been playing in the league and obviously we’ll have home advantage,” she added during Team UCU’s interaction with the media.

But UCU will not have it easy even in their own backyard. Nkumba have won five straight netball titles since 2004 and are not in a charity mood heading into this year’s event. “It’s a tradition.
The netball title is ours,” Patrick Ssebuliba, the Nkumba University sports tutor said yesterday.
Ssebuliba also expects outstanding displays in men’s basketball, volleyball, handball and football.
“Because we don’t have enough facilities, we concentrate on disciplines in which we have a comparative advantage,” he added.
