Wananchi top NHL first round after thrilling encounter with Weatherhead

By MAKHTUM MUZIRANSA

Kampala- Wananchi’s first round performance is a near-perfect response to finishing runners-up in last season’s National Hockey League (NHL).

Derrick Akuwa has returned this term as a man on a mission and has been a key cog in ensuring Lugogo’s most decorated side have collected 13 points from a possible 15 in the first round.

On Sunday, he opened the scoring by dragging his third short corner chance into the bottom right corner as Wananchi drew 3-3 with defending champions Weatherhead in a hotly contested and physically charged encounter.

However, Wananchi’s defence, marshalled by makeshift sweeper Collins Batusa, lacked the assurance that Akuwa gave upfront and on two occasions could not hold the lead for more than four minutes.

Timothy Ntumba cancelled Akuwa’s 12th minute opener after a misjudged kick by Wananchi keeper Joseph Ochan in the 16th minute.

Weatherhead mounted pressure but then lost steam when striker Vincent Kasasa was suspended for 10 minutes for needlessly swinging his stick back at Wananchi’s Tony Okema.
