Wananchi sides certain of ACCC slots after winning Independence Cup

KAMPALA. Wananchi men beat Weatherhead 4-3 on penalties in the finals of the Independence Cup held on Monday at Lugogo to stake their claim as one of Uganda’s representatives at next year’s Africa Cup of Club Championships (ACCC).
In April, Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) elected that one of the country’s two spots at ACCC goes to the National League winner.
The other spot goes to the winner of a playoff between the teams that win the Easter and Independence Open respectively, unlike in the past where the runner up of the league would benefit. Wananchi have won both Cups – with Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Stallions as runners up at Easter. But the situation is far from sorted as Wananchi, KHC and Weatherhead are all still in contention for the league title.
“We are still consulting on this but I think if Wananchi go ahead to win the league too, KHC and Weatherhead – as runners up in the Cups – will have a playoff. If KHC or Weatherhead win the league, then Wananchi as winner of the Cups will take the second ACCC slot,” UHA general secretary Phillip Wafula, said. Weatherhead topped the round robin games with 10 points while Wananchi finished with seven after a 1-0 loss to KHC.
However, when Wannachi and Weatherhead met in a pulsating but goalless final, Wananchi prevailed with spot flicks from Innocent Raskara, Collins Batusa, Emmanuel Baguma and Thomas Opio.
Moses Tushabe and captain Emmanuel Wabuyaka, missed for Weatherhead after decent efforts from Ashraf Tumwesigye, Alfred Agaba and Solomon Mutalya.
Meanwhile, Wananchi Ladies needed a late winner from talisman Doreen Mbabazi to fend off a resilient Weatherhead in the final.
Wananchi, actually need one win from six games, to seal the ladies’ league and if they keep to form as is widely expected; “Weatherhead take the second ACCC spot after finishing second in both Cups.”
