Spirited Uganda fall to favourites Germany

Ugandan players attempt to block a Germany player. The game finished in a 24-0 rout against Uganda.

German 24-0 Uganda

It was always going to be an uphill task for Uganda to overcome favourites Germany in their Pool E encounter. With a 29-0 victory already registered against Tonga early on, Uganda had reason to believe they would get good results when they came up against Germany.

The first half was played in Uganda’s territory as they kept defending, being denied the opportunity to use the ball, until Phil Sczerny pounced on a cross kick to put German 5-0 ahead until the break.

The second half turned into a familiar story as German kept winning all the restarts, punishing Uganda who failed to keep the ball, allowing Phil Sczerny to get a brace as the Ugandans started showing signs of tiring out after defending for most of the game.

Perhaps it would have been a different story had marksman Lawrence Sebuliba calmly gathered Marvin Odongo`s  pass but instead lost it forward. Uganda looked like they would not score, which they didn’t, as the Germans kept adding to their points with two other tries.

Uganda still have a pool game against Jamaica on Saturday at 4:44am, meaning their HSBC World Series core status dream is still alive.
