KAMPALA. Reigning Uganda Sports Press Association woman rugby player of the year, Grace Auma, admits that her performances during last year’s Rugby Afrique 7s tournament in Zimbabwe counted a lot in her being awarded that diadem.
In Zimbabwe, five of Uganda’s nine tried came from Auma. Uganda finished in fourth position behind South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Thus, Auma knows that a repeat of the same during another continental outing shall boost her chances of staying on top.
Auma is one of the 24 players summoned by coach Helen Koyokoyo Buteme for the Rugby Afrique 7s Championships, which also double as 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
The tournament is due September 16-17. South Africa, Kenya, Tunisia, Senegal, Madagascar, Namibia and Zimbabwe will be the other teams, and the winner will gain automatic entry into next year’s 7s World Cup in the United States.
“Yes, I played well in Zimbabwe and I believe I can still do more. I have since gained more experience and confidence. The Uspa award has also given me reason to work harder to stay on top,” Auma said, ahead of today's night training session at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.
Auma made her debut in 2015 during qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games, in South Africa and has since become vital for the Lady Cranes.
