The sport hit an all-time low last month when Kenya’s B team made light work of Uganda in the Elgon Cup. Drostke’s short visit couldn’t have come at the right time

Just when Uganda rugby needed a lift, Free State Cheetahs, a South African rugby institution has come to the rescue by lending a hand.
Their first step in providing solace to the wanting rugby state in Uganda has been sending Naka Drotske, the Free State Cheetah Head Coach to assess the rugby level.
Drotske arrived on Sunday and swung into action on Monday by conducting a session with the under 19 national side preparing for the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) tier B challenge due next week.
The former springbok has already been astounded by the passion and intensity of the players and everyone involved in the game.

“I love what I have seen so far. Everyone is willing to learn and widen their knowledge on the game, that kind of passion shows we are on the right track,”

Strategy sessions
Drotske will also carry out strategy training sessions with premiership, championship clubs, national team coaches, players and the senior women’s teams.
The relationship between the Uganda Rugby Union and Free States Cheetahs is the genesis of a new chapter in Uganda rugby which will see Ugandan youngsters taken to Bloemfontein for training and conditioning at Free States Cheetahs
The 43-year-old’s visit ends on Friday as he has to be in the box when his side takes on Sharks in the Absa Curie Cup on Saturday.
Uganda Rugby Union Chairman Andrew Owor has described the development as a step in the right direction.
“The support from Free State is going to benefit us a lot both technically and tactically. In the long run the positives will eventually come out,” said Owor.
