Coach Duncan wants Rugby Cranes to tick last box

Coach Duncan wants Rugby conducts a training session at the Legends

KAMPALA-  The Rugby Cranes host Zimbabwe on Saturday in their final test of the 2017 Africa Rugby Gold Cup. Coach John Duncan wants his side to finish on a high in a campaign he has described as a ‘good one.’

“I think it has been a good campaign so far but we still have one more box to tick then I would regard the job as done,” he told Daily Monitor. “I would obviously like to finish the campaign with a win and we`ll do everything in our power to go for the win,” he added.

Uganda has managed two wins, a draw and a loss in four games, placing them third on the six team log with 11 points. Regardless of the outcome from the Saturday game, Uganda will stay in the Gold Cup and challenge for 2019 Japan World Cup qualification next year.

Duncan who got the Cranes job in 2015 has polished Uganda with help from Robert Seguya get to a better place than it was a couple of years ago, earning promotion from the Silver to Gold Cup where they will play for the third year running in 2018.

“There has been a solid improvement in our play and am happy with the depth we have developed since 2015,” he noted.

The South African tutor has enjoyed some memorable moments in the Africa Rugby Gold Cup he would love to sit and replay multiple times, citing the away performances in Kenya and Senegal. Uganda drew 33 all with Kenya and beat Senegal 16-17 in Dakar a week later.

“The first win against a West African side in West Africa was memorable. The way we played against Kenya in Kenya was also remarkable,” he told this paper.

According to Duncan, Uganda has also produced some of the better tries he has witnessed as far as he recalls. “The tries we have scored have been some of the best I have seen,” admitted the laid back character.

Uganda go into the Zimbabwe tie with advantage of  a two weeks rest unlike Zimbabwe who have a week to recover both physically and mentally from the 31-23 loss to Tunisia.
