In Summary

Brenda Kayiyi is in line to retain the MVP women gong with Matlida Tino, Christine Kizito, Charlotte Mudoola, Helen Buteme and Beatrice Atim in the fray too.

One year has passed since the completion of the 2012 Nile Special Super 8 Rugby League – the basis upon which the Most Valuable Player (MVP) is chosen.
The players’ annual award ceremony for the 2012 season is tonight at the Sheraton Hotel and there are six nominees for the prestigious MVP award, which has been held by Sadolin Mongers’ forward Andrew Olweny. Rugby Cranes skipper Mathias Ochwo leads the nomination list that also includes MTN Heathens’ teammate – wing Jonathan Onen for Shs1m award.
Ochwo had a blistering season as Heathens won a fourth successive title but was superb in leading Uganda to winning the Elgon Cup for the first time since 2006 and reaching the final of the Africa Cup.

Onen finished with 15 tries in the league, only second to DMark Kobs’ Steven Ogwete whose 16 touchdowns won him the top scorers’ gong and Shs0.5m. “It’s good to be nominated and even better to be a member of this team (Heathens),” Onen said.
G4S Pirates duo of Marvin Odongo and Timothy Dumba and Kobs’ wing Justin Kimono, a winner of the Uganda Cup last year, complete the five-man shortlist.

Odongo is also in the running for the best upcoming player gong following a stellar introductory season to national team rugby following his graduation from high school the year before.

Philip Wokorach, then at Toyota Buffaloes, Impis’ Adnan Mutebi, Solomon Okia (Buffaloes) and Asuman Mugerwa (Heathens) are the other contenders.Wokorach won this award last year.
