Hippos impress but Pirates rule Jinja

KAMPALA. Jinja hippos, the hosts of the second leg of the Guinness National Sevens Series would have come off as an easy choice for the best team on the day. Their fluidity set Dam Waters ablaze but Buzz Pirates` steel took the day with a 26-5 over Hippos in the final.
After winning the first round at Kyadondo a fortnight ago, Pirates have not shied away from making their intentions clear on and off pitch. They have talked big and done the business if results are to go by.
The Sea Robbers` captain, Ivan Magomu credited his side`s maturity and consistency for winning the two legs so far. The two factors have left the rest of the pack chasing shadows as the series head for the third round on Saturday at Kyadondo.
“The side has matured really well and everyone knows their role. With all that in place we are even bound to get better.” Magomu told Daily Monitor.
Betway Kobs , Pirates` biggest threat to this year`s series could not match their first round exploits after Hippos surprised in the semis while another big name, Hima Cement Heathens , could not go past the quarters as Toyota Buffaloes did the damage.
Kobs captain Syrus Wathum is not about to give up taking the sevens gong for the fourth time in a row. To him, it’s still early days with five more rounds to go.
“We still have many rounds to play. It’s just a matter going back to our training sessions and try to work on areas we are lagging behind, we can still take control of the series if we fix those areas,” said Wathum.
The series head back to Kampala on Saturday with Toyota Buffaloes hosting at Kyadondo.
