Lekuru stars in RTL U-18 rugby tourney

By Swaib Raul Kanyike

KAMPALA-The Rugby Tackling Life (RTL) U-18 7-aside girls’ rugby tournament came to a successful end, with Jinja Police Teargas Rangers emerging winners.

Powered by Emilly Lekuru’s 13 tries and Tina Akello’s nine conversions, the Jinja-based side won all their five games against Lira Matrix (33-00), Apac Tigers (24-12), Baby Panthers (37-00), Busia Lady Rhinos (47-5) and Kitgum Junior Queens (24-12).

Lekuru, who was Uganda’s top scorer at the Rugby Afrique 7s championships in September with three tries, was simply unstoppable for Teargas Rangers.

For a team that also had established players like Mary Gloria Ayot and the Mufuwa sisters (Rachael and Immaculate), it would have been an upset for the Teargas not to carry the day.

The tournament was aimed at giving an opportunity to players from different regions of the country to test themselves.

As is the norm with RTL activities, the tournament was preceded by a life skills talk session led by Lady Cranes’ Peace Wokorach, a graduate of the Rangers.

Moa Wejle, the founder of Mamas Rugby (a team of female players from across the globe), graced the tournament. With the support that her organization has always extended to women’s rugby in Uganda, she must have been impressed with the talent that was on show at Kyadondo Rugby Club.

Naguru Fortuna Invaders won the U-14 mixed (boys and girls) category.
