Two in final Lady Cranes team

Coach Helen Koyokoyo Buteme thinks she has done enough to right the wrongs of last year.

What you need to know:

  • Long serving Charlotte Mudoola retains the captaincy duties.
  • Unlike in the past when strength and conditioning proved to be the team’s Achilles hell, the players believe their collective workouts at Marco’s Gym and Spa in Naalya have brought out the best in them.

KAMPALA. Ahead of this year’s Women’s Rugby Afrique 7s Championships in Botswana, Lady Cranes coach Helen Koyokoyo Buteme has named two uncapped players in her final 12-man final team, a clear departure from last year when she handed debuts to five players in Tunisia.
Black Panthers’ Ritta Nadunga and Black Pearls’ Mary Gloria Ayot are the two players who will have their chances to wear the national jersey in the annual event which is due May 25-27.
“Ritta (Nadunga) has a very high work rate in both defense and attack. She is fast and has an eye for gaps; a playmaker who can create something out of nothing.
“She is also a good tackler who looks for work on the field. She has been on fire during the training sessions so it was easy for me to pick her. For Ayot’s case, it’s her determination that has seen her through,” Buteme told Daily Monitor.
The team also sees the return of former captain Emmanuela Oroma and Peace Mirembe, who both missed last year’s edition. Long serving Charlotte Mudoola retains the captaincy duties.
Buteme has for some time been expressing her approval for this team, saying it is the most complete she has ever worked with.

Unlike in the past when strength and conditioning proved to be the team’s Achilles hell, the players believe their collective workouts at Marco’s Gym and Spa in Naalya have brought out the best in them.
