Wokorach ditches retirement plans

Man machine. Wokorach (With the ball) is arguably the best No. 13 in the country.

What you need to know:

  • Michael Wokorach, an ‘outside center’ for Hima Cement Heathens made his Cranes debut in 2009 against Kenya in Nairobi.
  • He has won two Elgon Cup titles, six league titles as well as lifted the Uganda Cup five times.

KAMPALA.

Three weeks ago, Hima Cement Heathens and Cranes center, Michael Wokorach, suffered a broken jaw during a training session with his club.
“Signs I should retire, now my jaw is gone. Maybe the body has allowed,” he posted on Facebook. His post was followed by an avalanche of get-well comments. Many urged him to keep playing. And it seems he has bowed to the ‘pressure’.
Speaking to Daily Monitor yesterday, Wokorach, arguably the best No. 13 in the country, said: “Yes, I was thinking of hanging (sic) in the towel, but my family advised me to give it one more chance. I am getting better; the jaw is much stable now.
“It was a simple collision with Ben (Okello). But it turned out different and I had to go for an X-Ray, which confirmed a fracture above the big jaw bone. But I hope to recover sooner than expected.”
Having been an integral part of Heathens and Cranes since 2008 and 2009 respectively, Wokorach has seen and done it all. At 33 caps in the 15s format and many appearances in the 7s version of the game, he has worn the Cranes jersey than any other current player.
Pushed on why he had thought about retirement, Wokorach said: “I have won every award and trophy, individually and with the team. So, sometimes the motivation definitely disappears.”
His trophy cabinet has two Uspa Rugby Player of the year awards, two top tier MVP awards, one league top scorer’s award and two Elgon Cup winners’ medals. He has also won six league titles, five Uganda Cups and five 7s circuits.
The latest setback is not the first in Wokorach’s career. When he had just started playing, he broke a collar bone and last year, he suffered a spine disk dislocation.
