Wokorach named Rugby Cranes Sevens captain

Learning curve. Captain Michael Wokorach and his teammates upstaged Sri Lanka but were no different from the metaphorical fish out of water during the losses suffered both in Australia and Hong Kong. FILE PHOTO

What you need to know:

  • Wokorach who was made captain on March 10, is no stranger to leadership.
  • He has captained Heathens and deputized for Brian Odongo in the Cranes test side a number of times.

Michael Wokorach was on March 14 revealed as the new Rugby Cranes Sevens captain, replacing Eric Kasita who has moved on for further studies in USA after leading the side for three years.

Wokorach who was made captain on March 10, is no stranger to leadership; he has captained Heathens and deputized for Brian Odongo in the Cranes test side a number of times. With all that leadership experience at hand, his new role should be another opportunity to exhibit his skills.

“I just added Michael because of his leadership and experience at that stage,” coach Tolbert Onyango told Daily Monitor in 2016 after recalling Wokorach into the sevens fold, a statement that made him a strong candidate for the captaincy in case there was need for change in the future as it has turned out to be.
With the side set for a demanding year, Wokorach’s task does not get any easier as he has to steer the young side through three major showpieces. The HSBC World Series Qualifiers in Hong Kong and the Commonwealth Games both occur in a space of nine days early next month before the Rugby Sevens World Cup in July in USA, San Francisco.

“I am honoured to be named captain again, it's a big task for the upcoming tournaments, however I am not too worried since I have been captain before and the technical staff believes in me with the experience to lead the 7s team to success,” Wokorach said.

Wokorach's first task as captain will be leading the side to Zimbabwe for a rehearsal tournament to gauge how ready they are for a busy year. The side leaves on March 22 for the two-day tourney before heading to Hong Kong.
