AFCON: Fit Onyango can't wait for Uganda-Ghana tie

Denis Onyango is Africa's best

What you need to know:

  • The other Group D game between Mali and Egypt kicks at the stadium at 10pm Ugandan time.
  • Miya has been Uganda's match winner on many occasions and Cranes are in Gabon because of his scrambled finish against Comoros in September last year.

Fresh from winning the Caf Africa-based Player of the Year award and being a key part of the 2016 Caf National Team of the Year award, Denis Onyango is a man on a high.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper has scaled nearly every height in club football - he won it all in 2016 - but has a national team CV that conspicuously lacked participation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
That blemish ends on Tuesday when Uganda face Ghana at 7pm Ugandan time in the opening match of the Group D at the Victor Vacher stadium and the deputy Cranes captain can't wait.
"This is our time," Onyango remarked. "We are hungry to show Africa and the world that we can play and not just play but play well."

Onyango suffered an injury scare in the 3-0 reverse to Ivory Coast but looked in fine shape as the team went through their final practice yesterday at State Sogara.
He is expected to start in goal.
Onyango is already among the greatest players Uganda has produced but the keeper, who is flattered by references to him as Africa's best footballer, wants to pay special focus to the Ghana match.
"It won't be easy but but are not an easy side too.
"We put in a lot to be here and we will fight to reward our fans here and back home in Uganda."
Meanwhile attacking midfielder Farouq Miya says he won't mind who gets the goals as long as Cranes get the 'right result' against Ghana.

Miya has been Uganda's match winner on many occasions and Cranes are in Gabon because of his scrambled finish against Comoros in September last year.
He has not yet scored against Ghana and says the most important thing is the team and not him.
"As long as we win, that is what will matter. Not who scored the goal. That has been the message drilled in the minds of all players."
