KAMPALA.

This could be the least expensive World Cup yet, well, at least for Pay Television subscribers in Uganda.
This is after StarTimes Uganda secured the media broadcasting rights to the 2018 Fifa World Cup as one of the official broadcasters in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The World Cup is a global football competition that will run from June 14-15 in Russia. It is this kind of interest StarTimes will dig into with additional production features like commentary, replays, analysis and highlights shows.
“Securing these rights is testimony to how much StarTimes has grown as a media group with global influence over the last eight years,” the company’s vice president Aldrine Nsubuga, told journalists at his office in Kampala as he launched their World Campaign under the theme “All 64 matches in HD and Live.”
StarTimes, as official World Cup broadcasters, also retain the rights to sanction those interested in showing the World Cup in public places.
StarTimes will also show the World Cup on their online platform like the StarTimes app but customers on the satellite and digital platforms have different pay options that range from daily to monthly subscription to ensure they enjoy the month-long tournament at their convenience.
“We have over 1.4million subscribers. That is 70% of the market share and our task is to ensure the World Cup comes to them at a low cost,” Nsubuga, who also doubles as brand and marketing director, said.
A full satellite kit could cost one up to Shs128,000 with one month subscription. Those only interested in subscribing can do so for as low as Shs1,000 on a daily basis on the Nova Bouquet while monthly subscription ranges from Shs12,000 to Shs54,000 depending on the package.
Those interested in decoders and antennae can purchase them for Shs78,000. Daily subscription for decoder packages ranges from Shs800 to Shs 3,000 while monthly fees range from Shs10,000 to Shs 36,000 across the three packages.
“People love the World Cup but previously it has come at a high cost for both equipment and subscription. Also with the current security threats in the country, it was paramount that we make it easy for people to watch the games in the comfort of their homes,” Nsubuga added.
