Fufa move to end broadcast impasse with new regulation

KAMPALA

Fufa yesterday announced a new regulation that will ensure all clubs registered at all levels of the league are bound in all TV rights.

The move is seen as an effort to get all clubs sign SuperSport’s deed of adherence that would enable league games be broadcast, which Vipers and SC Victoria University refused to approve during the first round.

“We reached that conclusion on Saturday after an executive meeting,” revealed Fufa CEO Edgar Watson at the federation’s weekly press briefing at Mengo yesterday. Vipers Chairman Thadeus Kitandwe, however, insisted the regulation does not count unless it is passed by the General Assembly.
“The executive has no authority to decide for the clubs and besides the federation does not own the league’s commercial rights,” he countered.

Fufa president Moses Magogo (pic right) at the start of the season signed a memorandum of understanding with Kavuma Kabenge that would enable broadcast company SuperSport telecast the league. Ironically, the federation later acknowledged receiving an offer from Azam, a rival broadcaster, although there has not been official communication about whether it was accepted.

The federation at the same function also announced the federation’s takeover of an FM station 102.1 with immediate effect.

The station according to Magogo was acquired using part of the $500,000 sent to federations by Fifa from the Fifa bonus grant acquired from revenue fetched after the 2014 World Cup.
