Green light for KCCA to host Caf matches but Vipers bid fails

Void filled. Joseph Ochaya was a core member of KCCA last season but his absence has not been felt since he moved to Zambian side Lusaka Dynamos.

KAMPALA- KCCA will consider themselves lucky after getting the green light from Confederations of African Football (Caf) to host their continental engagements at the Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo. The good news comes just days to their Caf Champions League (CL) encounter with Club Primeiro de Agosto.

Unfortunately it was not a similar script for Caf Confederations Cup representatives Vipers after the continental body didn’t give the nod to St Mary’s Stadium whose construction is nearing completion in Kitende.

Setback for Vipers
The setback has forced Vipers to take their opening game of the Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) Second Round against Lweza to Namboole Stadium.
In a letter dated February 2, and signed by the Fufa CEO Edgar Watson, KCCA will use the 10,000 capacity seater stadium that has existed for 11 years.

“As you are aware Caf inspected your stadium (on Saturday January 28, 2017) which you had proposed to host your Caf competition match on the weekend of February 10-12, 2017,” read part of the statement.

“Caf has permitted the use of the Phillip Omondi Stadium to be used for the Caf CL matches,” the letter continued.

KCCA management have spent the last two months working around the clock to improve the facility in a bid to beat the Caf deadline, which they managed to do to the delight of the club CEO David Tamale. “We are humbled to know that the hard work we have put in to develop our stadium is being recognised by Caf and we can only do better,” Tamale told the club website.
Before playing Club Primeiro de Agosto, the 11-time league champions will host BUL in their opening fixture of the AUPL second round on February 7.
