Dar es salaam- In just 40 minutes, Michael Birungi gave KCC the lead, assisted for the second before he was shown red as KCC defeated Khartoum 2-1 to finish third at the Cecafa Kagame Cup yesterday.

It was a team performance that assistant coach Sam Ssimbwa believes will go a long way in building chemistry for the Lugogo-based side next season.

“The tournament has been very competitive for us from the onset and I am sure we gave a good account of ourselves,” Ssimbwa told Daily Monitor yesterday.

“When you look at all the teams we played including Khartoum they were better prepared teams than us, but we needed to leave a mark at the tournament and third place is not that bad,” he added.

KCC in many replicated their semifinal performance against Azam. The key difference, of course, is that they found the net against the Sudan side having failed to trouble the Azam net.

Birungi capitalized on a Khartoum defensive lapse from the right side before he shot past Mohamed Ibrahim Abdalla.

He was later joined by teammates as they celebrated by taking a selfie. Two minutes later, Birungi turned provider as he played a neat pass to Muzamir Mutyaba that allowed him to double the lead. The win came with $10,000 (Shs34m).

Meanwhile Azam beat Gor Mahia 2-0 to win the trophy and a cash prize of $30,000 (Shs102m). Gor Mahia took home $20,000 (Shs68m).
