KAMPALA- There is an old saying of the grass suffering when two elephants meet.

But as Vipers and KCCA, elephants in Ugandan football met in the Fufa Super Cup on Saturday, it is the clubs that literally suffered on the grass of Muteesa II Wankulukuku Stadium.

In the end KCCA triumphed fittingly in post match penalties following a goalless draw to mark the start of the domestic football season.

“Arguably the best teams in the country, exhibited some good football despite the terrible pitch,” KCCA coach Mike Mutebi said of the game in which both sides missed several first team members.

Like he later admitted, Vipers created the better goalscoring opportunities with last season’s league top scorer Daniel Mzee Sserunkuma missing decent chances at the start and end of regular time.

The latter forced a good save from KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago who spread himself to divert the ball after Sserunkuma was put through on goal by Dickens Okwi in the closing stages. At the other end, one of few sleeek passing moves from KCCA involving the two Allans Kyambadde and Okello ended with the latter seeing his effort saved.

In the penalty shootout Lukwago saved from Aggrey Madoi and the otherwise impressive Moses Waiswa shot wide for Julius Poloto to score the final kick for a 4-2 win.

Nevertheless Vipers’ Mexican coach Javier Martinez who was handling his first high profile game was satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We tried all the time to be in front. Maybe we played better but whoever makes the goals wins. These errors will be corrected and we will be able to face the league.”
