In his pre-match notes in the lead up to his team’s clash with Vipers, KCCA manager Mike Mutebi noted that it was important for both sides to put on a good show.

“The two teams are regarded some of the best in the league. So we should expect good football from both teams,” Mutebi said.
For the few thousands that thronged the match at the StarTimes Ground, many left disappointed with the performance of the two teams that have over the years come to be associated with free-flowing attacking football.

“At the beginning both teams looked like they both wanted to go for it. The performance would’ve been better without the referee interfering,” an irritated Mutebi said of centre referee Rajab Bakasambe’s performance.
Yet while Bakasambe’s whistle irritated many of the fans, both teams also appeared to deviate from their known style of play as they cancelled themselves out. Vipers best chances, that included the foul on Taddeo Lwanga by Timothy Awany that led to the penalty came as they tried to pass the ball in the opponents half.

Yet they often went for the long ball over the top in search of forward Stephen Mukwala. KCCA on the other hand scored their opening two goals from set pieces and later opted to soak the pressure particularly in the second half as their opponents sought an equalizer.
“Playing against a team with supposedly with good passers we were beasts without the ball and beautiful with it,” Mutebi stated afterwards.
Vipers coach Da Costa meanwhile believes his team is going through a tough spell that will eventually pass.

“We have had to change players every game,” Da Costa said of the seven match spell in which his team has won only once.
“Our performance is good but not creating chances. Other games we are creating chances but are not able to put the ball in the net,” he added.
