KCCA coach Mutebi still awaiting his side to peak

ARUA. KCCA, on Thursday, sealed the club’s first ever domestic league and Cup double with a 2-0 win over Big League side Paidha Black Angels in the Uganda Cup final played at the Betway Greenlight Stadium in Arua.
The feat was an improvement from the previous season when they only triumphed in the league after coach Mike Mutebi returned to the club for a third stint.
On Tuesday they will also be seeking to make giant strides in a bid to reach the quarterfinals of the Caf Confederation Cup when they travel to Nigeria to face Rivers United.
Despite what could be described as the team’s best season, Mutebi like the previous season maintains the team can still get better even though they appear to be some distance ahead of the chasing pack.
“Giving liberty to people who know what they do like me, to do what I do best. That is what the chairman Julius (Kabugo) has done for not only me but the whole structure,” opined Mutebi as to what he thinks is the difference between his team and the rest.
“Most of the club chairmen in this country want to interfere, select lineups but Julius (Kabugo) and the board have been different,” he added.
Room for further improvement
“The average age is 24, and most players still have six years in them. If they do things right, the sky’s the limit. They are going to dominate the game, if everything goes according to book. There are good structures in place, they have liberty, but also have to understand why they’re playing.
“Most of the players in this country play occasionally. They haven’t mortgaged themselves to the game. But our players now know their responsibility and their careers that it’s important they concentrate and God willing the sky is the limit,” he further added.
Shifting focus to the continent
Mutebi was expected to travel on Friday with the same match day on squad for Tuesday’s Caf Confederation Cup fixture away to Rivers United. “We did not play as well because of the pitch but you expect the performance to improve as we play on the continent.
Youngsters Allan Okello, Julius Poloto, who were Cup tied and midfielder Ivan Ntege, who missed out because of suspension were expected to be part of the team that departed early this morning.
