KAMPALA. It will take a collapse of gigantic proportions for champions KCCA to relinquish their Azam Uganda Premier League title.
With seven games left, the Lugogo-based side are level on 48 points with rivals SC Villa but with the latter having played three games more.
This was after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in an eventful game played at Villa’s Masaka Recreational Ground on a wet Saturday evening.
After losing their previous two games, Villa needed all three points to keep their slim hopes alive and showed more intent in the first half with star striker Emmanuel Okwi twice being thwarted by goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan.
It was however, the visitors KCCA who took the lead three minutes into the second half when Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s predatory instincts helped him notch a league leading 17th goal of the campaign.
Villa goalkeeper Samson Kirya parried Brian Majwega low shot with the veteran forward reacting fastest on what had otherwise been a quiet evening.
“It was a good game of football from both sides despite the bad pitch. And we are obviously happier with the result,” KCCA coach Mike Mutebi stated.
“And overall the referees too had a good game,” he added.
Villa though strongly disputed the latter part, faulting referee Brian Miiro and his assistant Mark Ssonko for failure to apparently spot two handballs in the opposition box.
“If it means awarding three penalties in a game so be it,” raged Villa coach Wasswa Bbosa in response to questions about whether their opponents deserved a penalty of their own when midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba appeared to have been fouled.
His team though did get one penalty, awarded on 72 minutes when the impressive substitute Farouk Musisi was fouled by KCCA goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan.
Okwi stepped up to convert his ninth goal but in the end it mattered less.
At the bottom of the table, Godfrey Oromchan’s brace helped Bul to a 2-1 win over Lweza to open up a four- point lead over their opponents who remain second from bottom on 25 points in a tight relegation battle.
