Uganda Christian University (UCU) played a massive role as Kampala International University (KIU) missed out on progressing to the quarterfinals of last season’s Nile Special University Football League.

The Mukono-based University side inflicted a 2-0 defeat that set the tone for a disappointing season in which KIU finished bottom of the six team Group B.

The result coupled with the 1-0 loss in 2015 made it two straight wins as UCU turned the tide following elimination by KIU on away goals rule in 2014.

Today, KIU will be keen to regain the advantage when the two teams meet in the opening game of this season’s competition at UCU in Mukono.

“The team has had better preparations in addition to the new players we signed,” KIU’s Junior Baziwane who has been part of the team’s coaching staff in the past two seasons stated.

The Kansanga based university is counting on Jalil Zimula and Joel Male to make an early impression against the Jackson Nyima coached UCU in Group A that also includes Makerere and Busitema.

The latter only fared slightly better than their opponents as they fell to Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) at the quarterfinal stage despite a second placed finish in the group stages.

This year’s tournament includes an increase in teams from 12 to 16 and consequently the competition format that will see teams divided into groups of four.

The top two teams from each group will qualify to the quarterfinals after the group stage that will run up to May with the knockout stages taking place in October.
