On an absolutely unforgettable final day of the University Football League (UFL) this season, Kampala University (KU) were finally crowned champions following a 4-1 victory over Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Must) on Friday. But KU were only handed their accolade after fellow title contenders Nkumba slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of deposed champions Makerere University on the same afternoon in Entebbe.
David Ndihabwe scored Makerere’s brace in the 27th and 52nd minute. And with the final round done and dusted, KU, coached by Vincent Tumusiime, ended their campaign with 35 points, four more than second-placed Nkumba. It was Faisal Mulondo who broke the deadlock for KU against Must on 10 minutes before adding the other in the 27th. Left back Richard Ayiko made sure they collected the maximum points before recess with a third in the 25 and despite Must’s Bony Luze pulling one back for the hosts in 28th, Peter Otai sealed the result in the78th minute. Last week KU had a chance to wrap up their campaign but their celebrations were put on a hold by Nkumba, who defeated them 2-1 at Villa Park. The scenes of jubilation that greeted the pitch form KU fans after the final whistle, summed up an incredible afternoon that was a fitting finale to an exciting season.
