Kawooya sinks URA as Bul pounce Maroons in Uganda Premier League

KAMPALA.

Farouk Kawooya netted the winner three minutes from time as SC Victoria University beat URA 2-1 to move three places up to sixth in the Azam Uganda Premier League (UPL) log.

Frank Kalanda, with his third in five matches, had given coach Moses Basena’s URA a sixth-minute headed lead off a Yayo Lutimba free-kick before SCVU winger Titus Lubega leveled from the penalty spot following Sam Ssekito’s foul on Kawooya.

The victory at Namboole last evening, SCVU’s third in six games, thrust them three places up to sixth on nine points, three fewer than joint leaders KCCA and Vipers.

Four-time league winners, URA, had a chance to go top of the table on goal difference had they mustered a three-goal margin victory and they smelled it when Kalanda gave them the lead. Even when Lubega equalized, URA still believed.

They continued probing and could have scored the second only for SCVU goalkeeper Joseph Ssebuliba to turn Kalanda’s header away to safety.

Yet it is that probing that opened the tax collectors, consequently leaving room for SCVU to levy dues on them.
And when they did, it was a quality goal; playmaker Nicholas Kagaba’s teeing Kawooya after some craft, who took a touch before drilling the ball past goalkeeper Brian Bwete for his third of the campaign. Defeat saw URA drop three down to ninth with eight points.

At Luzira, Mike Ndera grabbed a brace as Bul thrashed Maroons 4-1 to keep the Prisons side winless and at the bottom of the table. Phillip Sempira and Paul Kibande scored the others while Shaban Juma got Maroons consolation.
