KAMPALA- Traditional giants Kibuli SS face off with nemesis Kawempe Muslim in a vengeful Kampala Copa Coca-Cola final at Bishop Cyprian Kihangire S.S, Luzira today.
This is the climax of the Kampala Champions League that will include various finals of different sporting disciplines.
Kibuli, who have won the national title a record eight times, have a score to settle against a Kawempe side that has eliminated them in the two previous district editions. Kawempe stopped Kibuli in the semi-final in 2012 en route to winning the trophy against Uganda Martyrs, Rubaga and again in 2013, before losing to Lubiri SS. Both teams exude confidence ahead of this showdown having qualified for the national championship in style.
In the preliminary rounds, Kawempe emerged winners of Kawempe Division, before leading Group C that included: Uganda Martyrs High, Rubaga, Ntinda View and Model High in the penultimate round. In the district semis, they saw off defending champions Lubiri SS 4-3 on penalties having shared the spoils 1-1 in normal time.
Kibuli have equally been impressive. Having led the Makindye Division group on 23 points, scoring a massive 47 goals in nine matches, they also led the tough Group B, outwitting Old Kampala and Gaddafi Integrated School. They eliminated Uganda Martyrs High, Rubaga 2-0, thanks to goals from Bayo Godfrey and a well executed free kick by Sande Steven.
Kibuli and Kawempe lead the list of Kampala’s representatives that also includes; Lubiri, Uganda Martyrs Rubaga and Old Kampala in the national finals due April 26 to May 10, at Layibi College, Gulu.
All qualifying action, according to Ayub Khalifan, the Secretary General Kampala Region ends today.
