Legends match: Davids, Sabrosa to arrive first

Dutch great Edgar Davids ( right), famed for his goggles and tenacity in midfield, will arrive on Qatar airways tomorrow afternoon

KAMPALA.

In his playing days, Edgar Davids was always first in the tackle and in most cases first to win the ball.
It is thus not surprising that the former Dutch international, who also shone at club level for Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus and FC Barcelona, will be the first to arrive in the country for Saturday’s historic match between legends of the Catalan giants and Uganda All-Stars.

Davids will be returning to the country for the second time in three months after visiting in October to pledge his commitment to the cause of helping Ugandan football by playing in the match to generate funds for an academy.

Davids won’t be the only member of the Legends team touching down tomorrow. Simao Sabrosa, the former Portugal international, is due at Entebbe Airport tomorrow but on a different flight.

The biggest group, from the city of Barcelona, will fly in with KLM tomorrow night and includes former goalkeeper Jesus Angoy, striker Santiago Ezquerro, former Spain defender Sergi Barjuan and the coach of the Legends team Victor Munoz Manrique. 1995 Champions League winner Patrick Kluivert, 2006 Champions League final hero Juliano Belleti and 2006 Italian World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta arrive on Thursday with Ludovic Guly and Deco to come a day after.

The Barca Legends will travel to Bwindi Impenetrable forest and Murchison Falls Park in tours organised by the Uganda Tourism Board, who hope to leverage on the global brand of the club and players to sell the country to the world for tourism.

The Uganda government, Nile Breweries through their flagship brand Nile Special, UAP, KFC, Sheraton Hotel, Fufa and Unicef have all joined hands to make the match happen. At Namboole on Saturday, there will be performances from Bebe Cool, Irene Ntale, Navio and Cindy before kick-off.
Tickets for the match are being purchased at all PayWay outlets in the country.

Meanwhile the Uganda All-Stars are set to start their practice at Namboole today on the outside pitch.
