Louis van Gaal claims Man Utd have no 20-goals-a-season striker

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has bemoaned the fact that he has no 20-goal striker in his squad.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of today’s Premier League clash with Sunderland, the Dutchman claimed nobody on his squad was capable of hitting the magical milestone for a top quality striker.

According to The Guardian, he said: “It is true because I cannot deny it – Robin van Persie cannot deny it, Falcao cannot deny it and Rooney is not playing there much any more.

“We cannot deny that, at this moment, we don’t have a striker who scores 20 goals in the season.”

Under-fire Robin van Persie is United’s top scorer on 10 goals. But the Dutchman has hit 20 goals in four of the past six seasons, finishing on 18 during the last campaign.

Captain Wayne Rooney, shunted into midfield for much of the campaign, has nine goals. He had reached 20 goals in four of his 10 seasons at Old Trafford before the current campaign.

On-loan Radamel Falcao has four goals. The Colombia international had not scored less than 30 goals in a European season before his knee injury curtailed his efforts at Monaco last season, though it is clear he is yet to find his feet at United.
