LONDON- David Moyes hailed his Manchester United players after watching them toughen up and show their strength of character against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Moyes had demanded a response from his players after their shock 2-1 defeat at home to West Brom, and they duly delivered in this 1-1 Champions League draw.
Danny Welbeck gave United an 18th-minute lead, only for Taison to level for Shakhtar 14 minutes from time following a mistake from skipper Nemanja Vidic.
But a point against the Ukrainian champions kept United ahead of them at the top of Group A and Moyes was impressed with what he saw from his players.
The Scot said: “We had to be harder to play against than we have in recent games, and we were. The team stood up well tonight. “It was a bit of disappointment that we didn’t see the game out but Shakhtar had a lot of pressure in the second half.
“Shakhtar are a good team and they’ve got a great reputation in terms of results here, so a point away from home in the group I don’t think was too bad a result.
“I want to see all the players play and give them all an opportunity. I’m beginning to understand them a bit better. “They were aware of how tough a game it was going to be tonight and I thought we defended very well.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t go on to win 1-0, but I also thought Shakhtar deserved a point.”
Moyes said Wayne Rooney, who missed the game with swollen shins following a clash with Welbeck in training with Welbeck, could start this weekend’s game away to Sunderland.
