KAMPALA. Yesterday SC Villa unveiled their 10 new player signings and an assistant coach ahead of tomorrow’s start of the 2017/2018 Azam Uganda Premier League.
While most of the focus was expectedly on the playing staff, the acquisition of Paul Mukatabala as Wasswa Bbosa’s assistant could just be as significant.
Having played together in the evening of their playing careers just over a decade ago and begun their coaching careers thereafter at the now defunct Victors, the pair was reunited again officially at Villa Park yesterday.
“We know each other well having played together and have been in contact since. Bbosa is an honest person and working with him will not be difficult,” Mukatabala stated after his unveiling.
A legend at the club having starred for the club in arguably its most successful period in the early 1990’s, the former midfielder is returning to the club for a second stint.
He previously worked under Serbian Srdjan Zivojnov in 2011 but is hoping for an upturn in fortunes at the club that last tasted league success in 2004.
“We had a long chat with the president and one of the issues we talked about was trusting the coaches to work independently,” Mukatabala admitted.
Club president Ben Misagga, unusually reserved at the unveiling, has built himself a reputation of intolerance with Bbosa the third coach to take charge last season following the sackings of Deo Sserwada and Shafik Bisaso. Villa who open the league tomorrow against the latter’s Soana in Masaka unveiled the squad including the returning Simon Sserunkuma one of five players with previous links at Express to excited fans at Villa Park.
Also on the team is youngster Abdallah Saidi promoted from the Junior team. Villa have for the last two season finished second behind winners KCCA.
